Clarence Brashler, was the son of John C. Brashler. Both of them settled in the state of Michigan, though they originally lived in the Chicago area. Both dropped the "c" from the original spelling of Braschler. Jim's great-great-great grandfather, Johannes Braschler, the immigrant ancestor of our branch of the Braschler family, was a baker in Loosdrecht, Utrecht, Netherlands. In 1847 he left there with his wife and family and by 1880 was settled in Lansing, Illinois. His wife Antje faithfully recorded family births, baptisms, and deaths from 1793 to 1861, a record of which was preserved by Lena De Boer. Johannes' father HENDRIK BRASCHLER is the earliest Braschler ancestor I have been able to identify. As stated in Anna's journal, Hendrik was married in Breukelen, Utrecht, the Netherlands in 1793. The marriage record on file in the Utrecht archives states that he was from Nenneke, Switzerland, and his death certificate indicates that he was from the Canton of Zurich. I believe this is probably the town of Naenikon, Uster, Zurich, Switzerland. Braschlers can be found living there in the 16th century, though I have not yet found any records relating to our Hendrik.Note: there is another line of Braschlers, primarily in Missouri, who are descendants of Ana Maria and Jacob Braschler of Wilsberg, Switzerland through their immigrant children Heinrich, Konrad, Jacob, and Maria Braschler. Ana Maria & Jacob would have been contemporaries of our Anna & Johannes. It is yet to be determined whether or not our two family lines are connected, though family oral history supports the idea.
Van Dreal Family History
Genealogy of Otto van Driel
South Holland, Netherlands
(abt 1750)
GRACE VAN DREAL,was the daughter of Gerrit Van Dreal [Adriaanus Gerrit van Driel], who immigrated from the Netherlands to South Holland, IL in 1866 at the age of 14. According to family lore, her grandfather, Arie van Driel died on board ship enroute to this country, and is buried on an island in the St. Lawrence opposite Quebec. The ship quarantined because of epidemic of Bubonic Plague. OTTO van DRIEL of Struijen, South Holland, Netherlands is the earliest individual of our branch of the family that I have been able to identify.
Browsing the Tree
Included here are the Genealogies of HENDRIK BRASCHLER and of OTTO van DRIEL. You may view any family page or pedigree chart by browsing the tree itself, or by selecting individuals from the index of Surnames.
I have also provided separate family pages and photographs of our direct Braschler and Van Dreal ancestors, particularly where I happen to have photographs. In the interest of simplicity, I have chosen to make the most recent individual my starting point, rather than beginning with the earliest.
Dates for all living persons included here are stipulated as private.
Acknowledgements
A special word of thanks to Lena De Boer and Leslie Huizenga for sharing the journal of Anna Massmeyer with me, thus providing an invaluable roadmap to our earliest Braschler ancestors in the Netherlands. Ross K. Ettema of South Holland, Illinois also shared extensive information on the broader Braschler family connections in the early settlements of Thornton Township, Illinois. Our conversations and his publications "From the Land of Windmills and Wooden Shoes" (1976) and The Dutch Connection in South Cook County Since 1847 (1984) were both an immense help.
This is, and always will be, a work in progress. Your corrections, additions, and suggestions would be greatly appreciated, as well as copies of any family photos you might have access to. Please do contact me at my email address below.
